Mind, Body, & Soul: The Secret to Living a Healthy Lifestyle
Although “being healthy” is on most people’s New Year’s resolution list, whether or not you’ve succeeded in that, it’s never too late to start taking better care of yourself. There are so many benefits to a healthy lifestyle, but achieving it can be difficult. So here’s your how-to guide of taking care of yourself: Mind, body, and soul.
Mental health is such a huge part of our overall health, but it is often the part we pay the least attention to. Finding a ritual or forming a habit to take care of your mental health is an essential part of taking care of yourself. For some, this means meditation, for others more physical hobbies such as gardening, or perhaps it is a relaxing night in after a long week. Whatever method works best for you, taking the time out of your busy life to take care of your mind is necessary. Taking care of your mind makes it much easier to take care of your body, and vice versa. Each part of your health is dependant on the others, so make sure not to neglect the mind, especially if you’re trying to focus on improving the body.
Taking care of your body is something many people struggle with. Whether it is lack of time, motivation, or knowledge, doing what is best for your body can be extremely difficult. No matter what is holding you back, know that there is some kind of solution to help you stay on track with your goals. Having trouble eating right? Get rid of all the junk food in your house so that there is nothing for you to reach for when you get those pesky sugar cravings. If you are not quite ready to ditch them entirely, switch to healthier alternatives. Instead of milk chocolate, reach for a 60-70% dark chocolate, instead of sodium packed chips and dip, reach for crackers with goat cheese or peanut butter.
Remember to be proud of your accomplishments when you can! No one is perfect, and 30 minutes at the gym is better than not going at all. If the gym isn’t quite your style, try an alternative workout plan such as hot yoga, cycling, running, or an at-home workout program. Half the battle of physical health is your mentality towards it, so try to stay as positive as possible!
Sometimes, being “healthy” can take a toll, and it can seem more like a chore than a rewarding lifestyle. So, give yourself permission to cheat every once in a while! Sure, that mac n’ cheese might not be the best thing for your diet, but if it will make you happy, go for it. Knowing that it’s not the end of the world to stay in bed for a day or skip out on a workout because you’re just too tired is a healthy mindset to have within reason. We can’t all be the social media influencers and models that train for hours a day to maintain that perfect flat tummy, and accepting that and being patient with yourself is essential. Hobbies are also a great way to nurture the soul- are you creative? Taking up a creative hobby (even if you’re not that good at it) can be a very fulfilling way to take care of yourself.
Overall, imagine your health as a ball balanced on a 3 sided pyramid, if you do not support every side, the ball will fall. Every part of your health is important, so don’t neglect one in favor of the others. Your health goes hand in hand, taking care of your body will lead to a healthier mind and soul, and vice versa. Keeping a positive attitude and being patient with yourself is key in this process, and remembering your ultimate goal: You want to change your life for the better!
